The newest addition to the Hawaiian Concert Series at Hulaville promises a very interesting performance.
The Duo-Tones, two masters of surf guitar have hit upon a unique and winning idea: by playing as a duo (leaving out the drums and bass) they put the focus on their delightfully creative dual-guitar interplay which lends fresh appeal to the surf-instro genre.
And why are they playing at Hulaville? What do they have to do with Hawaii?
Those who love Hawaiian music are very likely to appreciate the Duo-tones’ music as well, as the two musics have so much in common. Decades before the early ‘60s surf movement in California was thriving on the instrumental sounds of Dick Dale, the Belairs, the Chantays and the Surfaris, Hawaiian music was similarly reflecting the attitude of beach-life on other shores of the same Pacific Ocean. You might even say that Hawaiian music was the “original” surf music.
The Duo-tones (guitarists Paul Johnson and Gil Orr) would certainly say so; and though they do not play in the classic slack-key style, you will enjoy their music for its similar qualities: masterful fretwork on melodic tunes that convey the balmy, laid-back feeling of the beach-oriented life, punctuated with surges of power reminiscent of big waves. (Note how this description fits both kinds of music equally well.)
Paul Johnson co-founded seminal '60s surf band the BELAIRS ["Mr. Moto"]; in recent years he has been playing with the SURFARIS ["Wipeout"]. Gil Orr has been with the CHANTAYS ["Pipeline"] since the '60s.)
With two CDs and a growing visibility, the Duo-tones are creating a stir among music fans who are discovering just how rich this stuff can be when it's played with the skill and authority that Paul and Gil bring to it!
“The Duo-tones are the rare example of the creators of a genre remaining vital and continuing to contribute to its growth... they have taken a huge step in making surf music palatable to a wider audience.”
