JIM “KIMO” WEST.... Slack Key Hawaiian Guitar.

Award-winning Hawaiian slack key guitarist, Jim “Kimo” West returns to The Coffee Gallery Backstage with special guests Adam Werner on guitar, Marina V. and Diana Tanaka on vocals. Kimo is also known as long-time guitarist for the world?s most successful musical comedy artist, “Weird Al” Yankovic. Their recent CD, “Mandatory Fun” recently debuted at #1 on Billboard and won a Grammy ( and Al has been known to make surprise guest appearances at Kimo’s shows)

Recognized as one of the world’s top Hawaiian “slack key” guitarists, KImo brings his own unique musical perspective to this great acoustic guitar tradition. The “nahenahe” or gentle sound of ki ho’alu as it is known in Hawaii is heard throughout the recent Oscar-nominated film, “The Descendants”. His use of multiple tunings , including many of his own invention and his fluid technique, give Kimo a unique and identifiable sound and his playing literally transports the listener to the islands of Hawaii, a place of great natural beauty where people remain highly connected to the “aina” or land.

He is a recent winner of the Hawaii Music Awards, a Na Hoku Hanohano (the Hawaiian “Grammy”) nominee and a two-time winner of the LA Treasure Award for his contributions toward the perpetuation of ki ho’alu.

Kimo performs at the slack key guitar festivals in Hawaii and most recently as a featured performer at the Southern California Slack Key Festival. His playing has been featured in a number of films, TV spots, the Disney Channel and NPR.

Also featured will be traditional hula, a storytelling art form that dates back many centuries in Hawaiian culture.

“His mastery of slack-key guitar, as prominently displayed on this record, is not just fueled by technical precision but also depth of emotion. For example, "Maui Skies" is poetry set to music; it is bursting alive with the constant evolution and vibrant colors of nature, its soothing textures caressing the heart and lighting fire to the soul.” JAZZ CORNER 2/2012

"Jim Kimo West’s new recording continues his Slack Key explorations in his unique and beautiful style, and in various tunings, including two of his own invention, further accentuating his own sound" -- GEORGE WINSTON pianist/ guitarist.
