Hawai’ian island native Kamaka Brown offers a series of shows featuring his original short stories accompanied by guitarist Joseph Thompson of Ashland, Oregon.
Brown, a comic, writer, and producer born and raised in Hawai’i now lives in Southern California. He has a catalog of original stories written in Hawai’ian Pidgin English of pre-statehood Hawai’i told through the eyes of a child living in rural O’ahu.
You will enjoy a nostalgic romp through the back roads of country living and the wide eyed wonder of being part of the blue collar neighborhoods of urban Honolulu. Brown’s shows are a two hour “back porch” hang loose journey filled with stories, humor, memories and music.
This is a one of a kind unique show that must be experienced to understand. Previously sold out shows in Southern California attest to the power of the spoken word and the joy of a simple solo guitar playing softly like a gentle breeze blowing along a north shore beach at sunset.
The Pacific Northwest show will feature Oregon native, classical guitarist Joseph Thompson. Inspired by a recording of Andres Segovia, Joseph turned to the study of classical guitar. His first lessons in classical guitar and music composition were from the music director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Bernard Wendt, in Ashland, Oregon. Based in Ashland since 1975, Joseph has pursued his music career as a performer, teacher, and arranger/composer.
“I am so excited that my friend Joe has accepted the invitation to play on my Pacific Northwest shows. Joe loves the islands and when he heard slack key guitar music he was fascinated by it. He has composed his own take of slack key influenced music especially for the show.” Brown said. “Everyone will be completely blown away by this classical guitarist blending the slack key style that is a Hawai’ian island signature.”
