Hanabuddah Days AlohaWorld Update

As the new year approaches we think of the many blessings of the years that have passed. We also remember the childhood experiences that punctuated the new year growing up in the islands.  Clinton Lee shares his story of the excitement and festivities around the new year celebration of his family in the latest addition to the growing catalog of stories titled "Fiyacrackah Days".

Join Clinton Lee and the many other island authors who have shared their "Hanabuddah Days" stories. Consider sharing your hanabuddah days story with us too!.

Hanabuddah Days Stories

Hula Association of the Midwest AlohaWorld Ohana

Another year has passed, so quickly, seemingly without enough time to gather our ohana's to experience joy, food and stories about the olden days. I was watching Hawaii 5-0 last night and the simple word ALOHA brought tears to my eyes. The giving, the kokua from all the volunteers, the pilikia we put aside to share our strengths, how all of our members participate to make our bond of ALOHA more solid. The truth of those who carry the ALOHA SPIRIT makes me grateful to be connected. So grateful, as a matter of fact, it made me cry. At my home, people thought I was practicing to be Speaker of the House.

New for 2011, Hula Association of the Midwest welcomes Scott from the Tiki Terrace as our new Vice President. Kathy is still President because who going mess with her? Kaleo is still the Secretary and Leanne is still the Treasurer, since the books balanced last year. We've added 2 new Directors; Wendy Takeguchi and Susan Kinney. Ron and Leeval  will continue doing whatever they were doing. Unfortunately, Shasta and Rick Hud has resigned. We give them our fondest Aloha.

We all look forward to next year's Aloha Jam in May and save the last weekend of Sept. for Kumu Hula Leialoha Lim Amina and her husband Mel, formerly of Makaha Sons. Be sure to check our website for upcoming events.

This month's recipe can be found on our website, HulaMidwest.com.  Be careful, your mouth may explode.  HAWAIIAN CRAB MEAT SOUP  by Aunty Poki's Daughter

MELE KALIKIMAKA to all; and to all, a very healthy, prosperous and good fun New Year!

Royal Hawaiian Chess Set AlohaWorld Sponsor

The Royal Hawaiian Chess Set First publically previewed in Hawaii 2009, following decades of design, development and final prototype; is testimony to Hawaii’s past as a sovereign nation, the only state that had a King and Queen and the only state to have a registered royal residence.

The Pieces:  In respect for the Royal Family, its traditions and kapu’s, the pieces are simple symbols of their positions and not replicas of their Royal likenesses. Crafted to meet staunton standards, ready to challenge any gamely opponent, imua.  Note: Each piece is weighted in 5 gram increments from the Pawns [5 grms] to the King[25 grms].

As an added bonus, the Royal Hawaiian Chess Set also offers checkers.  4 additional pawns  of each side, allows checkers to be played. When a pawn is ‘kinged’, it is replaced with any non-pawn piece such as a King, Queen etc., etc., etc.

Attention:

Mamon - Filipino Sponge Cupcake
Review By: Mokihana
Awesome!! I didn't have cake flour on hand so used regular kine flour but removed 2 T of it for this recipe. Ho da akamai, yeah? Easy to make, tastes 'ono. I love the texture and flavor. Yeah, I wen kakaroach one of them cuz I'm taking the rest to a potluck and I had to make sure tasted okay, yeah?

I didn't have the paper muffin tin liners either, but I sprayed the pans and they were fine. They'd look prettier with the paper though. Highly recommended. They don't get even golden brown on top, but don't worry... they're done.

I can always count on Miulang's recipes being no ka 'oi and this one is no exception.
